Act Utilitarianism and Rule Utitarism
Act utilitarian thinks that an act is right or wrong depending on whether it produces as much utility as any available alternative. A rule utilitarian says we shouldn't judge acts by their utility, and instead judge the acts by those rules, codes, practices, institutions. The distinction was not actually given that name until 19 59.
