The first step is to do what's called arousing bodi chita. This is the desire, the aspiration for awakening for the benefit not only of selves, but for all beings. The next step would be to feel if you can be in touch with the place in you that is beyond your personality and this body. And then there's one other practice i'll just touch on, although i don't really recommend this practice unless somebody's fairly advance in their spiritual path. It's a tibetan buddhist practice where we actually take in the suffering of another or the world as a way of a like bearing the karma ourselves.
