The Pros and Cons of NEON

The National Science Foundation's NEON program is one of the largest ecological research programs in the world. It costs 485 million US dollars to build, and an additional 65 million dollars a year to operate it. Not all scientists agree with the philosophy behind a standardized top-down model of doing ecology. Scott Collins and Alan App talk about their work within the LTER program which some see as a precursor for NEON.
