The island of new guinea has the third largest expanse of tropical rain forest in the world, split into two separate nations. Unlike its western neighbor, p n g grants its indigenous and original inhabitants customary land rights. 97 % of the land belongs to locals, but in reality many locals have had their land taken by companies through legal loopholes.
