Jesus is on purpose here summoning the most powerful affect that we have in us. Whoever loves father or mother more than me is not worthy of me, he says. This is every bit as high a Christology as the prologue to John. In the beginning was the Word. The Word was with God. The Word became flesh and dwelt among us. Well, Jesus is saying the same thing here, just using a somewhat different rhetorical style and symbol system.
