Irenaeus, Justin Martyr, and Clement of Alexandria in the Second Century
Clement of Alexandria seems to have made some offhanded statements about the nature of Christ, which were considered unorthodox by theologians at work after the fourth century. Irenaeus's promotion of the church and the institution of the bishopric as the pole stars of authentic Christianity was far more consequential than Justin Martyr's wacky idea that Jesus missed traveled through time and taught Plato everything he knew. Tertullian will get a lot of airtime in our next episode on the martyrdom of St. Perpetua and Felicity,. And Origen is someone you'll return to again and again.
