Scholastics and humanists were interested in both pagan and christian ning. They studied philosophers like aristotle, but also cicero, augustine, jerome for the purpose of developing character resilience. People turned to ancient philosophy as a source of comfort when they didn't necessarily still have full confidence in the philosophy of the church. Poetry was valued over logic and metaphysics. And it charted a middle course between dogmatic devotion to tradition,. which is how they saw the universities and total relativism, right? All there is no truth. Everything is equally valid.
