The Importance of Relative Success

A harmonious society has to keep growing sustainably or it will descend into conflict and violence. Even a long democratic history does not necessarily immunize a country from becoming a democracy without Democrats. People need to feel a sense of forward progress, like a cyclist who has to keep pedaling or he'll topple over. Why are relative success and growth per se substitutes for compliments?
