CHAPTER

The Red Scare of the Socialist Party

After the 1917 Bolshevik Revolution in Russia, socialism was reframed as something formed and dangerous. By 1920, Deb's watched from prison as free speech became the issue of the day. The Socialist Party chose Deb's to run for president again. They're convinced that if they can run Deb's for president from prison, that what they will do is essentially make imprisonment a national issue. This is a referendum on the First Amendment and they were inviting Americans to cast a protest vote. It would just never recover.
