People of color in New Orleans had a culture and an ethnic identity that was all their own. The term colored would come to have new meanings by the time we get to the Jim Crow era. Even more strikingly, if you lived during Louisiana's colonial period, your racial category may have changed up to three times depending on who controlled the colony.
