Cholesterol Is Not the Driving Factor in Atherosclerosis

Cholesterol is a fat and cholesterol cannot float through the bloodstream freely because it would cause embolism. Cholesterol needs to be on an aqueous protein, that is a protein that is soluble in water based liquid like plasma. And so cholesterol does not occur alone, it occurs as lipoproteins. It's these lipoprotein particles that are the vehicles that can get to the arteries and cause the accumulation of atherosclerosis. VLDL interacting with the artery wall and triggering inflammation and inserts itself into the arterial wall.
