There are three main sort of historical sources. There's Tastis, his annals. Sootonius who writes these biographies of the Caesars and there is Cassius Dio, who writes a history of Rome. None of these are direct contemporaries of Messerlin. And all of them come with their own problems. In addition to those historical sources, there is also a whole slew of literary and archaeological sources as you touched on.
