I think it's always fine to follow up. If someone has already mentioned their family and you're like following up, that's totally fine. Flying into personal details that you don't know about can create a stronger bond. When I was in Korea, I had a lot of students ask me about Americans or people from the West or like North America. They were saying that, Hey, you guys seem like you're a little bit selfish.
