We Can't Just Say, Oops, We Made a Mistake
America is a strong country with strong institutions and a long history of democracy that, for the most part, has held up against those who would seek to destroy it. Its norms and guard rails were able to stave off the worst impulses of the previous president, but it didn't do as well as we would have hoped. We can see now, after the insurrection, after th past year of lies and the new laws to support those lies, and the continued decay of the republican party, that what we have is far more fragile than what we originally thought. And once we have lost democracy to an authoritarian regime, we can't just say, oh, wops, we made a mistake.
