Sharp's Rifles by Bernard Cornwall is about a rifleman in the Napoleonic War who is raised up to become an officer. And there's like 30 or 40 Sharp's books easily, and frankly, most of them are the same story. They're some of my very favorite books. You read period stuff from the regency in order to find that voice.
