Joanne Freeman's new book is called The Field of Blood, Violence in Congress and the Road to Civil War. She says founding fathers didn't think there would be organized political parties. They assumed that an organized party was a group of people who are out to promote their own interests rather than those of anyone else. "There are no straight lines in American politics," she says.
