The Importance of Community in the History of Madness

Moderns tend to think of madness as being isolated, but that wasn't the case in France. People who were identified as mad were expected to be cared for by their family members. If the family can't handle it, then it's the responsibility of the community. Many hospitals explicitly refused to accept people who were mad.
