The Brains of Squid
New research shows squid can create patterns on their skin to talk to each other, even when the parts of their brains that make the talking happen are busy. This allows squids to quickly switch different body color dynamically in a matter of seconds. The researchers think the visual language displayed by the squid is like an alphabet. These patterns not only used as communication signals to the same species, but also used to warn off potential prey.
