The film is based roughly on the real story of Clifford Odettes, who was a New York-based playwright. He gets drawn out to Hollywood to write screenplays and just gets dumped. Barton Fink plays this playwright, he goes out to LA. The wallpaper is peeling off the walls, and there's all the wallpaper glues oozing. There's a lot of a sense that maybe John Toutreaux in hell.
