The accuser's word is the most important thing, and the accused against is nothing. If witchcraft is an invisible crime, who witnesses it? The victims. In salem and in mc carthy era america, many of the accused could save their hides by confessing. And that sounds very similar to the old if you've got nothing to hide, you have nothing to fear.
