The Role of Monotremes in REM Sleep

The only other mammal that was noted to potentially like REM sleep were monotremes. platypuses and echidnas showed signs of non-REM but not REM sleep. It has been questioned why we see reduced REM sleep in all three of these groups. And one of the notes was that it just might not be good for swimming because you have no muscle tone during REM sleep. You wouldn't be able to swim.
