New technologies hold promise for pulling carbon emissions out of the atmosphere. We need to remove approximately ten giga tons of c o two per year by 20 50 in order to keep global temperature rise under two degrees celsius, with forests burning faster than we can grow them. The last time the atmospheric c o two amounts were as high as they are to day was more than three million years ago.
