The Importance of the Audience in Subversive Production

Government seeks to paint certain writers and filmmakers as writing, targeting a foreign audience. They want to paint these artists as currying Western favor that they are completely colonizing themselves. Of course, the actual dynamic behind the scenes is they prevent these local intellectuals, writers, filmmakers from having that domestic audience. So we need to be cognizant of that. But such as the porousness of borders that these outside conversations do make their way into China as well. There is a mechanism where more diverse productions are seen by Chinese readers and spectators.
