Is There a Bottleneck in Learning to Read?
Many people who are congenitally deaf get cochlear implants, which enable them to bypass the ear. But they're still getting information from sound and would learn reading in much the same way. If a person is not hearing at all, we know that the brain is remarkably plastic and able to change based on what inputs it's getting.
