Disease played a more important role in the conquest than perhaps steel and gunpowder. In Mexico over the course of maybe 70 years, there were like six, seven massive epidemics. The rate of mortality for any one of these epidemics was perhaps 80% or 70%. As you say, an unknown disease coming from nowhere, killing everyone but not killing the Spaniards.
