The Problem With Volunteering

The German army was prepared for massive warfare in Western Europe. The British army wasn't, and Kitchener realised this instantly. He immediately set about trying to build a massive volunteer British army. In the end, there weren't enough volunteers and Britain would switch to conscription. By the end of the war, something like five million men would end up passing through the British army. That's equivalent to quarter of all UK men.
