Desmond spent the first few years of his life in clerkstorp, a town on the western reef of the gold seam. He came of age as centuries of land dispossession and political oppression merged into a partete the political system that then enations called a crime against humanity. Desmond remembers an early impression of what discrimination meant for black people in south africa. As a child, he contracted polio, which left him with a weakened, shrivelled right hand. Also spent nearly two years in hospital with tuberculosis when he was about 11 years old.
