The VA promises to build 1,200 units. How many are up now? A very small fraction. Right now they have only about 113 units open as we're having this conversation. There are two more buildings that are supposed to open this year, but they were supposed to have more than half of them done by now. Why is it taken so long? Well, the infrastructure is outdated and the VA has to upgrade that. But I found in my almost two years of reporting on this that another reason has to do with money for a long time. And that was a stumbling block.
When the Veterans Administration failed to build the homes it promised, unhoused vets built a tent city across the street — in one of the wealthiest neighborhoods in Los Angeles. KCRW’s Anna Scott tells their story in “City of Tents: Veterans Row.”
