In a two thousand four census, it was estimated that there were only around 16 hundred giant pandas in the wild, and b 300 in zoos. Female pandas really can have trouble conceiving - their fertility windows are very narrow. Because of their reclusive natures, though, almost everything we know about these endangered bears is from the study of captive animals.
