When we talk about catastrophic it seems that this is the idea thatr it's the severity of the cost of the risk if it were to actually happen. So for some risks, the consequences are relatively trivial or minor. On the other hand, sometimes the consequence of the risk is very, very severe. And so that's what we mean by catastrophic risk. It's a risk which would bring about permanent, irreversible and really, really bad, terminal consequences.
