Carl sagan and i were friends. We'd both had a particular interest in extra terrestrial intelligence. How really would you communicate with an alien intelligence in the distant future was of great interest to us. A music was settled on quite early, to make a record with music. And then we realized you could put other things in the grooves to and so and we had natural sounds and greetings and photos and all. Two of my deepest interests in life had always been a science and astronomy, the universe has a whole, on the one hand, and music on the other. So here was a chance to bring the two together.
