The old ITN commentary box beneath the scoreboard on Centre Court was kept free as a perk for people who work at Wimbledon. You feel like you're in some kind of wartime bunker because it's just plain concrete, absolutely stark and you just get to peek through this little slot and have the perfect view. Back in 1922 the positive buzz around the auspicious start to Wimbledon's new era at the church road was mirrored by a sense that tennis was on an unstoppable upward trajectory. The middle class was still trying to form itself and the tennis clubs that were at the base of tennis had a sense of coming together as a class.
