In 1918, exceptions to the compulsory school leaving age were abolished. From 1918 onwards, all children from the age of 5 to 14 were receiving a standardized experience of education for the first time. Schools mattered in all sorts of different ways: they were active at the sites of welfare and preparing children for their future lives.
