Vocal fry is a crackly kind of popping sound that comes up when people get to the end of Senate. It has become something that is basically a pariah here in the United States. In British English, it's not talked about as a negative feature at all. But there was actually a recent study with smartphone data where they would call on telephone calls and give approval for them to take your number.
