Theory of evolution was at the forefront of people's minds in late 19th, early 20th centuries. Bergson wanted to explain little scientific loose ends that didn't seem to be fully understood yet. He thought mechanistic theories could never fully account for new things being created out of evolution. His solution: Elan Vitale, loosely translated to vital impulse.
