Historiansplaining: A historian tells you why everything you know is wrong
The Scandinavian Peninsula
Scandinavia is mostly made up of peninsulas, connected to the rest of Europe by land links. The northern link at the top of the Scandinavian peninsula is in the sub-Arctic, and hence is very remote from centers of European civilization. Scandinavia was the last part of Europe to Christianize except for some of the Baltic countries on the eastern side of the Baltic Sea. It retains its own distinct languages, customs, and religion for much longer than most of mainland Europe.
