Before 17 17 freemasonry was largely a royalist, scottish and northern english jacobite movement. The first big centre of masonic activity that we know of in england where there was a long lasting and prominent masonic lodge was at york. York was also a centre of royalism. So the emphasis on royalism really carries over from the older, sort of northern, stuart connected freemasonry is carried over but its transferred to this new loyalty of o whigism and hanoverianism.
