The Tripartite System and the Heart

The heart functions in part as a place where breath, which is drawn into the heart, is heated up and mixed with blood. And so the heart is a source of heat and a source of activity. It has a sucking and pumping motion. Blood in both the venous system and in the arterial system ebbs and flows into the heart. In the way that it would do in a tidal river, it tends to go in one direction, but it goes back and forth in the heart. We're going to come to the cultural significance in that in a moment - we're talking about anatomical significance in early times.
