Is Ethnography an Academic Thing?

I appreciate you prefacing your answer with a level set about what ethnography is, right? It's not always clear what constitutes ethnography. So I'm happy that you mentioned that it does have an academic connotation to it, because it definitely does. Ethnography and empathy have this link to them, you know, in pop culture right now and user experience specifically.
