calculus is a creation of the 1600s, by Isaac Newton and Gottfried Wilhelm Leibnitz. The Greeks were able to write the definitive treatise on plain geometry 2,500 years ago. Most historians would say that calculus had to wait for geometry to merge with this new-fangled subject of algebra.
