By the eight hundred eighties it seems that the desire to control land was effectively eclipsing the activity of raiding and plundering. Perhaps sources of wealth were simply being bled dry there wasn't enough silver and gold left to take perhaps as more raiders spent their whole careers abroad the desire to return back to scandinavia with their loot diminished. Instead more and more of them were interested in staying and remaining permanently in these new countries. The biggest hordes of treasure that were brought back toScandinavia were from the eight hundred sixties which arguably was the peak of the raiding era.
