What Was Attila the Hun?
There's evidence that Attila's empire may have extended as far north as the Baltics and encompassed large swaths of modern Russia. One Roman source records that Attila held dominion over islands in a north sea. Archaeologists have found evidence of Hun ritual sites as far west as the Rhine River. By the late 440s, he certainly considered himself to be a power broker on par with, or perhaps greater than, the eastern and western emperors of the Romans.
