The Continental army was overwhelming an army of amateurs who were learning on the job, what it was to be an army. Washington's chief of artillery was a bookseller from Boston. The level of amateurism had disastrous consequences in terms of discipline and organization. On other occasions, it had an almost sublime effect because these were ordinary people,. not fighting as mercenaries, not fighting for the king's shilling.
