Universities in Europe - The End of the Universalistic Era

In the 12 hundreds, universities were very universalistic. People made long journeys to go study at these universities. But in 13 78, there was a dramatic schism where different branches of the church fell into dispute over who was the real pope. And this made it more difficult politically and sometimes dangerous to venture beyond your own home region. So we see the end of this universalistic era, an increasing localization. More and more universities were expected to serve the lar local state and the growing middle class.
