When we think about twentieth century thought, the philosophical and theoretical debates that have framed our cultural and intellectual life, to your mind, are their particular thinkers and their lectures that have a had a role in that? I'm going to be noren slightly depart from the question. There is a particular kind of preachy, lecturing, sound or voice that is often written. It's the voice written which has had enormous power for me. And i'm referring now to an african american tradition, beautifully exemplified by james baldwin's the fire.
