If you were visiting alexandria during the reign of the ptolemies, that wasn't the only sight worth seeing. The great lighthouse would have been one of the tallest man made structures in the world and used a giant mirror to light the way for ships entering the city. Maybe you would it one of the city's ornate temples, like the serapeum. And finally, if you were a travelling scholar, you might be given special permission to enter the ptolemy's great library.
