In the Store: A Tribute to Russian Women
In the Store is essentially a tribute to Russian women and takes place in a store where the women are lining up for the day's rations. Fears directly deals with Stalinist era thought suppression, even though Khrushchev had already given his anti-Stalin speech. The reaction to the poem from the first movement of the symphony showed that the era of thought crimes and public shaming was by no means over.
