The Differences Between Nouns and Verbs in English
Nouns end in a voiceless TH sound, and the verbs end in a voiced TH sound. John Hart confirms that these distinct pronunciations also existed in Elizabethan English. We still tend to use the letter S for both the voiced Z sound and the voiceless S sound. Even Shakespeare included a little joke about the limited use of the letter Z at the time.
