The Differences Between Hydromorphism and Metaphysical Atomists
Aristotle rejected metaphysical atomists on the grounds that if atoms are extended, then they are not strictly atoms. He opted for hydromorphism which does not identify primary units of physical reality within divisible units but allows them to be complex structure units. Medieval halomorphists devised various ways of accounting for the different levels of organization found within living organisms based not so much on structure as on function.
