The asteroid impact was so successful, it carved off a lot of the asteroid's own material. And when that material was blasted off in the impact, it acted like a brief rocket booster to the asteroid. So overall, it's good news. You don't need quite as big a suicidal spacecraft as you needed. We basically have the technology right now to save millions of lives from a threat that would be doomed just a few decades ago.
